Approval for Up to 8,000 Robo-Taxis, Including 5,000 from Tesla
In Clark County, Nevada, Tesla, Uber, and Waymo have received permits to operate commercial robo-taxi services. The maximum number of permits granted is 8,000 over the next 12 months. The Nevada Department of Transportation unanimously approved three permits for autonomous vehicle network companies in Clark County. Tesla received approval for up to 5,000 vehicles, while Waymo and Uber received approval for up to 1,000 vehicles each. Uber plans to operate its service in partnership with Motional, a Hyundai Motor Group affiliate, and Zooks. However, the number of permits does not necessarily indicate the actual number of vehicles deployed, as Tesla's chief engineer for the Cybertruck stated that they would not be able to deploy 5,000 vehicles by next year. Las Vegas has become a major testing ground for the commercialization of robo-taxis, with Tesla and Waymo entering the market with their respective strategies. The permits for autonomous vehicle network companies are state-level authorizations for passenger transport services, and the actual operating areas and safety oversight methods may be subject to separate conditions. Las Vegas is a city with high demand for tourist transportation, making it a concentrated area for autonomous driving tests.
