54% of American Adults Perceive High Cost of Living as Their Biggest Burden
More than half of American adults identified high living costs as their biggest challenge currently. According to a Statista consumer insights survey, 54% cited high living costs as their greatest issue. Although the inflation rate has decreased from its peak in 2021-2022, the already elevated prices have not returned to previous levels, leaving households in a challenging economic situation. From January 2021 to July 2026, U.S. consumer prices increased by 26.7%, with food prices rising by 27.2%, rent by over 30%, and transportation costs by 35%. During the same period, nominal wage growth was recorded at 25.7%, but it has not kept pace with the rise in consumer prices, resulting in limited improvements in household purchasing power. In particular, expenses for groceries, housing, and transportation are essential costs that cannot be easily reduced, and when these costs rise faster than wages, the perceived burden takes longer to alleviate. The pressure of living costs can lead to reduced consumer spending capacity, which may impact economic outlook and interest rate expectations. This survey highlights the gap between the apparent stability of U.S. price indicators and the economic reality felt by households.
