19% Decrease in Employment for Young Workers in AI-Exposed Jobs
In the United States, employment for young workers aged 22 to 25 in jobs with high exposure to AI is 19% lower than in less exposed jobs. According to research from the Stanford Digital Economy Lab, employment for young workers in AI-exposed jobs decreased by approximately 11% from November 2022 to June 2026, while employment in less exposed jobs increased by about 10%. The researchers noted that while there is no evidence of widespread job replacement across the entire economy, the gap among young workers is pronounced. Employment declines were particularly evident in roles where AI replaces human labor, while jobs where AI complements human work saw stable or increasing employment. According to ADP Research, overall employment in AI-exposed jobs increased by 0.1% year-on-year in July, but employment for those aged 22 to 25 decreased by 1.3%. The researchers emphasized that the slowdown in hiring for young workers in AI-exposed roles suggests a more complex phenomenon rather than simply concluding that "AI has eliminated entry-level jobs."
